Br was shoddy, but much better than the private companies we have now, especially on the Southern and Midland routes

What I'm curious about is the naming of railway companies today. Railway companies during the steam age had far more illustrious, romantic names, and they actually held in their names the destinations that they went to, such as e.g. the London & North Eastern Railway. The name British Rail only implied that the company ran in the country of Britain, whereas neither Network Rail, Virgin Rail, or seemingly any other modern railway company had or has any implication as to where the line runs to. :shrug:

It's just a load of corporate jargon really - we often get 'East Midlands' branded HST's running on the east Coast main line on the full length of the route
